The beginnings of coordination chemistry in Polish science extend back to the interwar period and the Lviv school, followed by the Krakow school (Prof. Wiktor Jakób) and the Wroclaw school (Prof. Bogumiła Jeżowska-Trzebiatowska) after World War II (see the history of the Group).
Currently, the Coordination and Bioinorganic Physicochemistry Group at the Jagiellonian University (JU) is primarily interested in coordination compounds, organometallic compounds, and various types of nanomaterials based on d-electron metals. Our scientifical interests focus on relationships between the electronic structure and the chemical reactivity and biological activity of both natural compounds and those designed and synthesized in our laboratories. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms of thermal and photochemical reactions, as well as the nature of the physical processes that these compounds undergo. Based on the results of our fundamental research, we aim to explain natural processes relevant to our health and environment on the one hand, and design advanced functional systems for use in innovative catalytic, energy, diagnostic, therapeutic, or environmental strategies on the other.
